UK waste battery collector, G & P Batteries has designed a collection point called BattBox to encourage people to recycle waste portable batteries produced in the workplace.

The BattBox is a pre-paid collection service for waste portable batteries such as those used in toys, mobile and cordless phones, laptop computers and wireless keyboards. The service costs
£25
plus VAT.

G & P Batteries is hopeful the scheme will help increase the quantity of waste portable batteries being recycled in the UK. Only three per cent of waste portable batteries are currently recycled, according to the firm, and in order to meet EU targets this needs to increase to 25 per cent by 2012 and 45 per cent by 2016.

Michael Green, managing director of G & P Batteries said: 'many people are vaguely aware that batteries need to be disposed of responsibly but we have evidence that shows that a large proportion of them have no idea how best to do this, or even that waste batteries can be recycled. '

'We know that the workplace is a major generator of waste portable batteries, with the toy trade in particular producing large volumes. In launching the BattBox we are endeavouring to provide a simple and cost effective service that helps to protect our future environment.'
